The conversation in renewables is not about $/MW cost. Sure, we’re always pushing for a lower LCOE, but the real issue with renewables at the moment is intermittency. Put simply, the power generated in industrial plants (including solar and wind farms) has to be used immediately by the end-users.
This is an issue with wind and solar because we cannot control the parameters that most directly impact energy production (wind speed and light intensity). It’s important to understand is an average power rating using average wind conditions and light intensities. In high wind/light intensity conditions the machines generate much more energy, and vice-versa.
