Student loan forgiveness is a fundamentally regressive policy that uses taxpayer dollars to benefit the privileged few with a college education. We can do so much better if our goal is to help the working class (the overwhelming majority of which don’t have any student debt because they did not attend college)
I tend to align myself with the vast majority of Bernie’s policies, but this is one that I have a tougher time with for several reasons. My main issue with this stance is how it’s become an all-or-nothing situation where the only sensible decision is to cancel student debt when in reality the decision is much more complicated. This isn’t necessarily to say that there aren’t merits to forgiving public student loans, but there are issues with just unilaterally wiping away all federal loans.
