I have a 2-year-old. When we’re out, I can’t even look at my phone for a few seconds. They can suddenly runoff, on a whim, at any moment. Usually in the direction of the most dangerous thing in the immediate vicinity, head first, at top speed. I used to think that parents in the mall who had leashes on their kids were horrible people. Then I got older and had friends who are parents. And started hearing about how quickly they can disappear from your side and get into something that will kill them. I have a much greater understanding of why someone would do that.
