The German goal at Verdun wasn’t even to break through the Entente lines but rather capture a place so morally significant to the French that they would expend hundreds of thousands of men trying to reclaim it. The German goal was to bleed the France dry rather than to outright beat them. It was also being fought simultaneously with the Somme and with the Brusilov Offensive. Each of those three battles was larger than any other prior battle in the history of the world.
